Dating from the latter half of the reign of Charles II, this coffer is one from a distinctive group of West Country coffers, usually from Dorset, which have shallow carving to the front which is then stained in different colours. Chinnery illustrates a similar but more elaborate coffer on page 312 which he dates as 1650-1655. This example stands on good high legs and has its original wire hinges and internal hinges. 42 inches wide x 18 1/2 inches deep x 27 inches.
