A large and important 14th century Central European limewood group of the Madonna and Child with traces of original paint. The Virgin sits on a seat known as The Throne of Wisdom and extraordinarily, as it is not fixed, she retains her original crown. Despite some losses, there is no later restoration and this is a very rare survivor from the period. A similar group, described as 13th century, can be seen in the National Museum of Prague and this is illustrated in Gothic Art in Bohemia and Moravia by Albert Kutal fig 12. 41 inches high.
