A very beautiful limewood bust depicting The Virgin Mary. It retains a considerable amount of its original polychrome decoration and stands on an attractive polychrome and giltwood plinth which is probably a bit later. Whilst the bust is very much in the Florentine tradition it is more likely to have been produced in a Franconian workshop, possibly in Nuremburg. She is shown in a very tender and wistful pose with her head slightly tilted and framed by her curling hair and the beautifully carved folds of her veil. The bust is 16 inches high x 13 inches wide and plinth is 4 1/2 inches high making it just 20 inches high overall.
