Probably from Antwerp, this very beautiful carved oak group dates from about 1500. It depicts Mary Magdalene and the Virgin Mary as "weepers" and they would have been standing at the foot of Christ's cross. Mary Magdalene is shown in typical style with long flowing hair. In her right hand she is carrying the ointment pot with which she anointed Christ's feet and with her left hand she is drying her tears with part of cloak. The Virgin is shown with her head covered and bowed and her hands clasped in prayer and grief. The group retains much of its gesso and stands 16 inches high on the later oak plinth.
