A late Elizabethan oak clamp front chest of typical form, the one piece cleated end top with channel moulded decoration to all four sides which, as is usual, is removeable but is secured by pegs. The front board is decorated with nulling and punchwork stars and this is repeated on the substantial square section uprights, the base of which are shaped as feet. These chests were often kept in churches to store muniments and other valuables in the Black Mountains area of Wales. Wonderful colour and patination. See Richard Bebb "Welsh Furniture" vol I page146. 57 1/2 inches wide x 21 inches deep x 27 1/2 inches high.
