Until recently, this wonderful oak desk box had been in a farmhouse in mid Wales where it was used to house the family bible. It has three internal carved front drawers and a carved frieze to the front which includes the initials MK. The sloping lid is held by its original butterfly hinges and has an applied moulding to the edges, chipped carved ends and in the middle a wonderfully carved cartouche incorporating the date 1680. In the 19th century a base was made on which to put the box so that it was at reading height. This base, which is sold with the box, has two drawers and incorporates early timber. The box measures 33 inches wide x 20 inches deep x 12 1/2 inches high.
