Judging by the style of carving and split baluster decoration one would assume that this substantial boarded box would have a date of no later than 1680. However, it bears the date 1713 and initials ED and these are without doubt original. It is therefore a good example of how a workshop or carver carried on in the same style for many years, a feature that one does come across occasionally with provincial oak furniture. It has a two plank moulded edge boarded top held by its original butterfly hinges and extensive carving to the front and sides. In addition to the date and initials the carving on the front has two roses surrounded by foliage and the sides are carved with similar roses and serpents with arrow like tongues and long curved tails, chip carved to give the impression of scales. The box has its original lockplate but has lost its hasp. It is probably Welsh and measures 27 inches wide 20 inches deep x 10 inches high. Wonderful colour and patination.
