With an oak carcase, this lovely chest has a deep top drawer decorated with fruitwood veneers and four bone 'buttons' set around oval mouldings. Below are two further drawers also with fruitwood veneers and it stands on stile feet. Other decoration includes split baluster turnings and a carved bracket centrally at the top. The turned knob handles are probably old replacements and are through the original holes.Wonderful rich colour and patination. The chest is illustrated in British Antique Furniture Price Guide Fourth Edition fig 317 where is was valued at £6000-£9000 in 2001. It was in the private collection of John Steel who in company with his wife Diana founded the Antique Collectors'Club in 1966. It measures 37 inches wide x 22 inches deep x 34 inches high.
