An early 17th century oak strongbox with a cleated end top held by repaired iron strap hinges. On the front it has its two original iron escutcheons and inset on the sides are a pair of superbly carved walnut Romayne portraits a man and a woman, probably husband and wife. These panels predate the box by about 100 years. It has the owner brands SW on the top and front. n31 1/2 inches wide x 14 1/2 inches deep x 18 inches high.
