Recently acquired from a private collection in Essex, this excellent quality Charles II oak coffer, or kist as they are called in Westmorland, can be sold for a fraction of the price it would have fetched ten years ago. It has a three panelled top held by wire hinges (it has had later strap hinges removed) and inside it has its original lidded till. The sides are carved with chevrons and the top rail with lunettes and the front panels, muntins and bottom rail are carved with the Celtic inspired interlocking motifs that are typical of the area (see Chinnery pages 443-448 for similar carving). Excellent colour and patination. 50 inches wide x 22 inches deep x 27 inches high.
