A good 17th century oil on canvas portrait of a young nobleman attributed to the Suffolk born portraitist Mary Beale. The daughter of a rector from Barrow near Bury St. Edmunds, she moved to London in about 1670 where she became friendly with Sir Peter Lely and was much influenced by him and his style. She died in London in 1699. This sensitively worked portrait was probably done whilst she was working in London. From a private collection in Herefordshire, it measures 38 inches x 33 inches across the 18th century giltwood frame.
