Made ensuite during the first quarter of the 17th century in a West Country workshop, these magnificent James I oak armchairs have S-scroll carved top rails and double-scroll cresting incorporating three carved flower heads and arcaded panel backs with stylized floral designs. The downswept arms each have the unusual feature of extending beyond the inverted baluster arm supports and below the boarded seats are chain carved rails. The front legs have inverted baluster and reel turnings and below the rectangular profile stretchers are the original toes. The chairs were sold by the 7th Lord Harlech as part of the sale of the contents of Glyn Cywarch, a fine early 17th century house in North Wales. Of impressive proportions, the chairs are 50 inches high with 22 inch high seats and they are just over two feet wide and 21 1/2 inches deep. They have superb colour and patina and are in wonderful untouched condition.
